seasonal lockout

I believe the IPTO seasonal disconnect was standard on the SMTA.

The exception would be if an SMTA was spec'd with the "independent PTO delete" option - ie. with a non-live PTO. These tractors will not have (nor need) an IPTO seasonal disconnect control.

I've had seven SMTAs. They all had the lockout. Should they not stay engaged, a split shaft collar can be installed to lock the dog clutches together. I did this to my tractor because the external lever was in the way of a homemade front PTO I installed.

Same here Warder - the half dozen or so SMTAs I've seen have all had seasonal disconnects on 'em.

Bob,

I think you will find that all 6 volt tractors had them. That means SMTA, 400, 300. It wasn't until the 12 volt tractors, with the higher cranking speeds in winter, that the disconnect was generally deleted.

It is also possible that southern tractors weren't fitted with the seasonal disconnect. But we both live in the north so what do we know?

Warner - What do we know indeed! The only SMTA's I've seen have been here in western NY and southern Ontario - not exactly a representative production sample.

Incidentally an SMTA diesel (stock 12 volt electrics) I looked at last summer had a seasonal disconnect. Could it be in addition to ease cold weather starting it was also provided to reduce wear on to moving parts inside the IPTO when PTO is not needed?

It probably also saves a bit of fuel when when it's disconnected.

It is standard equipment with IPTO; use it to disconnect when IPTO is not needed. Saves wear & tear on the IPTO and makes for less noise also.

I had one on my SMTA, broke the coupling while using it on a baler. I was told that parts were not available but you could put in a solid collar to connect the shafts so that is what I did with mine. Seems like people, from board here, told me that it was not uncommon to break those connectors

Seasonal disconnect was a option after Farmall 400 serial 31183. Some tractors before that have the disconnect replaced with the solid splined coupling, because the shift linkage wore or bent, or the dogs wouldn't stay in because of wear or breakage.
