engine oil for cub

I have a 1977 and 1957 cub, what kind of engine oil should I use in them, also what do you use in the hydraulics and transmission? Thanks again.

Use what ever your oil of choice is for any other equipment you have. Today's oils are far superior to what was available then. I use 10w30 or 30w.

For the hydraulic system, Case/IH Hy-Tran is the preferred choice but I use Tractor Supply Universal hydraulic fluid. Does a good job.

In the transmission use 90w gear oil. It only takes 3 1/2 [u:51476144eb]PINTS[/u:51476144eb]. If overfilled it will just leak out the seals and coat the brakes.

Do the Cubs have a bolt holding on the damper pulley? I need to check one to make sure the engine isn't stuck after 20 years. It has been sheltered. Hal

No you need the crank or I used a pipe wrench ot the PTO shaft. Not recomendid but that will tell you if it's free. Another way is to put the trans. in 3rd gear and rock it back and forth.

Back in the '70's, when multi-viscosity oils were looked on suspiciously by old-school mechanics, we ran Havoline SAE 30 HD oil in our Cub in our custom mowing operation. The oil got chenged pretty frequently, since the Cub rarely sat still for more than a couple of days at a time.

And we used Hy-Tran for the hydraulics...don't remember ever changing trans oil.
