farmall m hydro question

on the hydro pump on a M you have the 3 outlet ports on the sides. i hooked my hoses in 2 the 2 closest to the rear, but when i go to pull the handle its doesnt wanna extended or pull the hydro cylinder on my grain drill. where did i go wrong? do i need to have one of those hoses draining back into the top where the dipstick? any help would be appreciated

the grain drill is a 12ft ih 5100.

Unless you have the "christmas tree" on the right side of the tractor next to the fill plug, you have one way hydraulics. You only need one hose going to the up port in the cylinder and a bleeder valve in the other cylinder port. Power up, gravity down. Sounds like you have one of the hoses going to the down port on the cylinder. It will not work that way. You can use any one of the ports on the side of the tractor.

The stock pump is for "one way" (pressure lift, gravity drop) hydraulic operation only.

It MIGHT lift your drill if you connect it like this: Connect the hose from the blind end of the cylinder to the front port on the right side of the tractor. Then remove the hose from the rod end of the cylinder and replace it with an air strainer fitting. However the pump may not have the pressure and oil capacity to fully extend the cylinder under load.

A better alternative is to install a 4-way hydraulic spool valve. Supply it from the same pump port as above, and plumb the return line back to the dipstick tube. You will now have 2-way (power in both directions) hydraulics.

However depending on the condition of the pump you still may not have sufficient pressure to lift your drill.

i have a char-lynn valve spool like thing, its got one port for in and one for out. it has 2 outlet ports for the hydro couplers, i just dont know how it came off since it was in a box with the tractor. i'm guessing i need to hook up a one side pressure for the in and for the out hook it back in to a T at the top of the fill neck. would that work?? i know it can work cause my uncle used his M to pull this before but he has his M in a million parts getting restored

Without seeing a picture, you might have the optional remote "Christmas Tree" valve that mounted to the reservoir fill tube. If you have a parts book (should have one if it is in a million pieces right now) you can see how the parts fit together. There is a side port for pump pressure from one of the tractor ports. The return is out the bottom and back into the reservoir (the T that you described).

Another issue when connecting to the ports on an M is that there is one port that can have a "delayed lift" function. I believe it was to be used for the rear gang of a cultivator to keep it in the ground longer once the front was raised. I don't have my operator's manual in front of me to say for sure which is the port, but seems to me it might be the rear one on the side with two? (hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong).

here are some pics of one of my m's with the aftermarket char lynn valve, it is mounted to the rear of the fuel tank. on your belly pump, you have three outlet ports, two near the engine on either side, and one to the rear. the rear was used for the delayed lift on a mounted cultivator. there was a valve in line in the hose for the rear cylinder on the rear cultivator gang. i ran one of the front outlets on the belly pump to the "in side of the char-lynn valve, then run the return from the char-lynn valve to the drain plug on the bottom of the belly pump, using a pipe tee and use the extra side of the tee for a drain plug. now, with the control rod in the full back position, the pump is flowing fluid thru the char-lynn valve. the valve will now give you two way hydraulics. heres some pics. my email is open if you have any ??s glenn

Thank you glennster, that's the same identical charlynn valve i have, today when i got home i stuck one of the hoses into a t on the fill tube and it worked great but i noticed it likes to push the fluid up and out the breather hole, so I'm gonna a T and run it liked user on the bottom on the pump

another thing you can do that is handy, on the lift all control rod, weld a second stop on it so you can pull the rod back to lock the pump on and set it on the second stop. if you look closely, you can see the stop on my m.

If you also look closely you can see the clutch assist option
