Tough times with the MD - Help needed

I ran the engine and got it warm to retorque the head on Saturday. When I was torquing (sp) the rack back down I broke one of the studs. The easy out didn't want to touch it, we did get the hole off center and that helped the easy out fail. Tonight I got back at it and got it out. I drilled the remaining portions and folded the bolt in. The easy out could get the bolt after that. It's all that easy...

Does anybody know the measurement of the stud? CNH can't get them. I will check with the engine shop tomorrow, but they will probably want to know a length. It looks like around 2" but I am not 100%. Can you use a bolt in place of the stud? The old timer that is helping me says no problem, but I am not in love with the theory.

what stud are you referring to? what size is it? in instances it is acceptable to use a bolt, but have no clue what your stud is for. only racks i know of are in the injection pump or a hay rack.

Dont see any reason a grade 8 wouldnt work. Finding the steel rod the same strength of original would be another problem.

Up here we call the big rod with all the valve adjusting arms the rack. I need the shortest stud in the setup. There are three different lengths used.
Sorry about that. As I reread the post it didn't make as much sense as it could have. I know a little more about what's going on than everybody else.

I ran over to the shop and got the junk one now.
Looks like it is 2" overall length with 1/2" of 3/8-24 and 7/8" of 3/8-16 and 5/8 of no thread in the middle.

Having a tough time finding it so far. Looks like Grainger, McMaster-Carr, and Fastenal are a no go. The engine shop is still looking into it.

Check with ARP (Automotive Racing Products). Though they are mainly known for making race parts, they also make aircraft, industrial and military fasteners. Get them on the phone and give the dimensions and maybe you can find something "off the shelf" that"s tough enough to last.

Not that familiar with the MD and my parts book is at the shop, but something to check if you haven't already. Some IH gas engines oiled the rocker arms through a HOLLOW stud that held the rocker assembly to the head.

I got some that were fairly close to the originals from the engine shop. They don't have as big of a no thread part in the middle, but they worked. I have the rack (or rocker arm assembly for some  ) back on and it should work. I didn't tighten it back down and set the valves.
