driving down the road today in pa and on the side of the road was a 400 with a wide front on full steel for sale. i slowed down but did not stop. did 400's come from the factory with the full steel option or is this somebodys creation?

It sure was an option & for a while, too. If it wasn't the Amish would have made it so. You should search around on the internet, if you get a minute, for modern Amish tractors. It's surprising & quite neat, all those tractors they've converted to steel.

I think it was Harold H who reported he saw several rows of steel wheel 856s at Farmall awaiting shipment to South America.

Jeffkoh,

Steel wheels were an option through the 806 series era. You can still find them in the 806 online parts book, although they are no longer available. Most were sold for export. In the early 60's on a Farmall Works dealer trip, I think 1964, there were probably 75-100 new Farmall 706's and Farmall 806's on steel wheels on the lot awaiting shipment to some South American country.

Steel wheels from a Farmall M, which are fairly easy to come by, will fit a 400. That is probably what were on the 400 you saw rather than home-made wheels.

Maybe Amish, but probably Mennonite.

The Mennonites have no qualms about using tractors, but most shun pneumatic tires.

Very few Amish are using tractors.

Lots of Amish around where I live. You can see most anything on steel.

Lot of Amish around here have used tractors for years. First was steel wheels, then rubber tread bolted to steel, now they make no pretence about using pneumatics. Use tractors and pickup bed or livestock trailers on the road for primary transportation (without paying vehicle taxes), but hire someone for longer trips. Some Mennonite factions (like Holdermanns) do much the same.
