i have a super m farmall that iem going to restore. it was my dads last purchase before he passed away. its a 1952 according to the x casting code. the tag is missing and cannot find the seiral number on the block . it shows two different engine kits at different number breaks . what i need to know is which one do i choose to order or is there any way of id the difference . to know which kit i need any help would be helpfull . thanks scott.

Scott,If you wire brush the flat spot on the block just under head above distributer you may bring up a number. As for break in serial and engine kit,It may have been when they went from 4"flat top pistons to Firecrater's and 41/8.Remove the head and you will know what you have and remove one piston and you will know size of wrist pin.Not much help but thats what I would do if no one has the answer. However I am confident that one of our knowledgeble farmall men will chime in .They will have the answer. Tony

Probably you see listings for C264 engine kits. C264 engine was also used in SMTA and 400 tractors. Serial # break for what aftermarket refers to for piston sets happened during 400 tractor models.
Check the engine block above the oil filter and above the metal cover on the side of block. Should find a raised casting # 356980R1 and also C264. If another casting # or its ground off the engine block was probably changed, 356980R2 counts as a change. Block serial number for a SM engine is often found stamped in just above the steel cover on the right side of block. closer to center of block from front to rear.
After all the years and changes that could be made it pays to take engine apart if possible before getting parts.

It is always wise to tear the engine down and measure and inspect everything BEFORE ordering a kit. Main bearings and rod bearings come in many different sizes to compensate for the wear on the crankshaft. If you know exactly which size you need, and order the kit with that size of bearing specified, life is a whloe lot easier.

scott, get the o/h kit without the main and rod bearings. have your machine shop get the bearings for you.
