Stage 2 Super H

Think of a stage II Super H as looking something like a smaller SMTA in that it has the squared off bolster, 2 holes in the grill, box-like hydraulic oil reservoir, and battery under the seat. It is most likely a '54 as the similar SMTA didn't appear until February '54.

Note that I didn't include the TA or IPTO. Those features weren't available until the 300 in '55.

Just to add its possible to find a very very late 53 Stage II Super H. A few were made in December of 53. However most were 54's. Would have to confirm the cast dates on it should be all manily 'Y's if its a 53; 'Z's would be 54.

Serial break was 19234, last 1953 was 22201, makes 2968 Stage 2's in 1953, 7084 in 1954. I have a 53 stage 2.

Stage I, II etc aren't official IH designations AFAIK.

They're common vernacular used by collectors to indicate major changes to the tractors. A lot was going on in the mid 1950's with farm technology, and IH was adding a little bit every year, presumably to prevent farmers from getting "culture shock," or simply to goad farmers into upgrading tractors every two years and boost company profits...

Stage I was an H with a larger engine bore and disk brakes.

Stage II added optional live hydraulics, moved the battery to a box under the seat, changed to a starter with a 3-bolt flange, and of course the aforementioned front bolster for the newer cultivators.

Stage III only exists in the M series of tractors, but it's known as the Super MTA. Much debate goes on whether IH had an actual Stage III planned for the Super H, but it never happened. All the features that would've been added to a Stage III Super H were present on the new 300 in 1955...

My understanding is that stage II WAS an
"official" IH designation, but it was kept in-house and never advertised. Whether it eventually leaked out from IH or is a coincidence that it is currently used, I don't know.

I also have a 1953 Stage II Super H. What a sweet, sweet tractor! Mike
