Throwout Bearing

Am having the engine rebuilt on my '50 Cub.
Wondering if I should replace the throwout bearing while I have the Cub split.

Carbon-graphite material looks good and the bearing takes grease (squirts out the top hole in the bearing??? Why??).

Lots of clearance between the bearing ID and the shaft. Is this normal?

What's the scoop with throwout bearings?

Thanks.

There usually is a tube that the bearing rides on. That takes up the space between the bearing ID and the shaft. I am not a big fan of graphite throw out bearings. They tend to break if mis-adjusted. If it were my tractor I would definitely replace it. Especially since you are already where you are. We just replaced one in a 'C' we have. Kind of pricey. It cost a little over $100.00 from Case/IH. A new carrier was needed for ours. I suspect you will also need to replace the carrier. JMHO

I am not the kind of person to want to always be spliting a tractor. I would say that if you do not know if it has been done within the last 15 years, I would suggest replacing the clutch, the pilot bearing, and the throwout bearing. These are components that do occasionally go bad, and if you are like me, I would consider it a head ache to have to get at them.
