IH 574 Smoking Badly -- not getting into RUN mode from START

I have not run my 574 in a while. Two weekends ago everything was fine puttering around swapping implements and leaving it running at the garage with the PTO on tinkering with an attachment.

This past weekend I wrapped up the work on the attachment and so headed off down the road to put it to use... but she smoked badly the entire mile drive down the road (High 4, opened here up).

When I parked it and pulled the oil dipstick to double-check she had oil (it did--I had checked), smoke came out of there. Oil hadn't been changed in a while, so good excuse to change that.

After I changed the oil I re-started the tractor and there was no noticeable difference when I moved the lever from the START position to the RUN. So it would seem the lever only is getting from STOP to START.

I didn't have time to do anything else before the Honey Do List came into play, so maybe I'll see something obvious. But I figured if any of you knowledgeable folks could point me in a proper direction of where to look given these symptos, that would be helpful.

My next step will be to change the two fuel filters, as that hasn't been done in a while. But any additional words of advice or directions of where to start investigating this STOP/START/RUN mechanism would be greatly appreciated!
