Is this the plow you can remove a shear?

Some one was talking awhile back about an IH plow that could be a 5 furrow or 4 furrow. I don't think my 766 needs a 5 furrow, so i was wondering if this can be cut back to be a 4 furrow. They are asking 2G for this plow. Is that a reasonable price? Thanks Kent

i havent used one of those plows but i don't think you could make it a 4 bottom without serious work. the tail wheel and its shifter are what make me think that. personally i son't think thats a good price. Maybe $750 if it has like new bottoms.

I think anything is possible, but that is not (opinion) a modular plow. To remove the last Bottom (the share is the cutting surface along the lower edge of the mold board, the bottom is the entire turning unit.)
Noting exact location of all parts welded, and shortening systems and linkages, rewelding all parts, and making it work is doable if you are a fabricator, or friends with one, or have as much money as needed. Trading it might be better, but big turning plows are not in demand due to modern practices in most locations. Jim

Not too bad of a job- just remove the last bottom assembly, shorten the main beam and steering rod, and bolt the tailwheel stuff back on. It looks like a 550, and 2K is about 4 times what it's worth. A little more if all the wear parts are real good. I sold one about 2 years ago for $200 (I think) to a friend, he made a fast hitch 4 bottom out of it.

As toolz said it's a IH 550 and easliy reduces to four bottoms. You can buy them here in Il for $200 - $350, $500 if it's really nice. The ops manual will tell/show you how to reduce it. The last one I did was from 5x16 reduced it to 3x16, that takes more work.

At 20% of his asking price he is going to be insulted. He may not know what the plow is worth, but he certainly will not accept that it's only worth 20% of what he is asking.

Around here you can get a really nice auto reset for less than 1K. I'd scrape some paint off and see if there really is gold under the paint!

Yep you can cut them down to a three bottom as i have done many . Just remove the tail wheel and shorten it up and reinstall the tail wheel and shorten the coupling pole . When done correctly they will plow like they should , done wrong they will never plow wright again .

Appears to be a 550 plow which weren't designed to be reduced but can be with a little work. As far as the value, $2,000 is way too high, maybe $500 tops. Hard to tell by the pics but from what I can see that plow needs quite a bit of work. 3,4,& 5 coulters are shot, 1& 2 almost appear to be oversized, At least a couple od the moleboards are showing a lot of wear righht behind the shins. Share show a lot of wear, especially if they are "deep sucks". Probably more that doesn't show in the pics.

I ownd a 540 & a 560 back in the day. They weren't the best as far as getting heavy trash thru. WE use to have to shred our corn stalks to get them to go thru, sometimes had to disc as well.

Depending upon soil type & how deep you plow your 706 might pull a 5 bottom if it's a 14".
