12 Volt Generators

I am putting a 12 volt generator on an older farmall m that has a mag. The voltage regulator for the 12 volt system seems to be totally differnt from the 6 volt genterator. Since the starting switch is independent of the electrical system, do I need to put a switch or a battery disconnet somewhere in this new system, or can this new voltage regulator be left connected to the battery when the tractor is not running?

What kind of regulator is it? If it is the correct one it should look the same and wire up the same as the 6 volt version, I'd think.

The old 6 volt system may have had a Cutout Relay versus a full fledged (3 or 4 terminal) Voltage Regulator as on the newer 12 volt system. Regardless, a cutout relay is necessary, whether a stand alone cutout relay (works between BAT and GEN/ARM) or as still present in a newer VR, to open the circuit from BAT to ARM/GEN when the tractor is shut down otherwise the battery reverse discharges rapidly and the genny overheats.

If you convert from an old cutout relay to a newer VR, the gennys FLD no longer wires up to the dash to a LHBD switch, it now wires to FLD on the VR

BAT on VR up to load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter

ARM/GEN on VR to gennys ARM post

FLD on VR to gennys FLD post

LOAD (if it has one) wires to the BAT input terminal on the light/ign switch

Id polarize the genny BEFORE starting

If you switched from Pos to neg ground, the ammeter leads need reversed as well as the coil if it had a coil instead of a mag ignition that is. With a mag no changes required or wiring used other then a posible grounding kill switch
