Farmall B just Shuts off. Dies

Got a Farmall B that just shuts off and won't restart until its sits and mess with the throttle. I rebuilt the Magneto with condensor, coil, points. Ran ALOT better. Now when driving it if you shuddly change throttle, it will die and not restart. Just like you hit the switch. Governor issue?? Ive was told there is a plastic bushing in the governor that wears out??? Thanks guys.

There are certainly parts in the governor that wear out, but I suspect that your problem is more likely in the carburator. You should be able to go from a dead idle to wide open throttle, and back again, with out it stalling. And that is all the governor can do.

I would get the carburator cleaned and rebuilt, make sure to get all the little tiny passages clean and replace the gasket between the carburator and the intake, an air leak there might cause trouble too.

I agree with Red Dave.
See if a continuous stream of fuel will come out of the carb drain. At least 1/8 inch stream. If it does, catch it in a can and make sure it will do so for at least a gallon. If not it is fule supply if it runs out well it is likely in the carb. Jim

"Floaties" in the fuel tank?? Good flow of fuel to carb??

Believe i would check these out BEFORE tearing into carb...but that's just me.

Good luck....Rick

Have you checked for fire to your plugs when it quits? You need to do this asap before anything cools. If you have good hot fire to your plugs you probably have a fuel problem. Hal

If it shuts off like a switch its probably the ignition. Remember the old saw "90% of carb problems are ignition related". A lightup spark tester will be your best friend to prove that it is or isn't spark. They're cheap enough at Car Quest or NAPA or wherever.

Why dont those who dont know just shut up there isnt any plastic in the gov. The gov failure wont stop then start again it just wont have any rpms to speak of but no way would cause engine failure. You need to take the drain plug out of the carb as quick as the engine dies check the flow fow at least 30 sec or so. Then if you have fuel flow you sure know it isnt gas and has to be ignition. I like to clamp a plug to the steering shaft and put a plug wire onit then turn it over with the starter that will twelly quick about fire.

It's the same reason, that when someone's car dies along the side of the road, the first thing they do is CHECK THE OIL... They don't know what else to do. They feel they have to do SOMETHING.

But like Gene said, yeah, the governor wouldn't have anything to do with the problem. The only way it would cause the tractor to shut off like a switch is if it exploded and pieces got sucked into the timing gears. However, the tractor would not restart. It would be locked up solid.

It's either fuel or fire.

Next time it does it, pull the choke. If the tractor tries to continue running, it's a fuel issue.

tank crystal clean. fuel out of drain ok. small stream. pulled carb off and tore down. floats have "liquid" in them, enough to tell something is in them. some rust in main jet area. Has Zeinth Carb. is the float adjustable to a spec or just leave it alone?? gunna get new float and needle and seat, gaskets.

dumb question. is it ok to put carb in automotive carb cleaner dunk bucket? or is it too harsh for something in the carb?

It is okay, so long as you don't put the gaskets or any other plastic/non-metal materials in the cleaner. You also don't want to leave the carb in the bucket for longer than is recommended.
