Muffler or Not

Have tried it both ways. Sounds nice with out muffler but if you have to use it for long periods of time you most likely have ringing in ears & a headache.I like the straight through IH mufflers. They cut down on the harshness.

Does not hurt it any but it also does not help it either. But in the long run it does hurt you because it is hard on the hearing and depending on your age you may wnat to run a muffler on it but if your old and are hard of hearing already then who knows

I have partial hearing loss from Farmalls, and other loud equipment. Tractors do not care whether Muffeled or not, People do. It has no affect on performance until tuned headers are installed on a racing engine. (unless a briggs muffler is installed on a 454inch chevy.) Jim

After the last muffler on our '52 Super M rusted out my great uncle bought an H muffler to replace it. Well the replacement muffler wouldn't fit so he just ran without for years. I doesn't seem to have hurt anything but it shot all the exhaust right into your face.

I bought a correct muffler a few years ago and its been great.

Yepper,

After ya loose your hearing like a lot of us old Farmall pharts have, you'll appreciate the wisdom of the mufflers.....................

PLUS, the use of hearing protectors.

An old working Farmall will run at about 80 decibles; the point at which hearing damage starts manifesting.

After thousands of hours on tractors without mufflers (mostly Farmall Ms and F-20s), I have excellent hearing at age 66!
I do not believe the low rumble of the old low RPM engines such as Hs, Ms and F-20s can do much damage. The whine of a high RPM engine with a turbo may be different -- I have never driven a tractor newer that 1961!

If you are hard of hearing already, you will continue to get worse. The only difference is if you are hard of hearing, the engine seems quieter, and you think you don't need hearing protection, WRONG. I am 73, my hearing is headed downhill, but I still use hearing protection to try and slow it down. My hearing started going south when I started driving tractors at age 12, I just didn't notice it until 20-30 years later. F-Dean is the exception and should consider himself lucky. However, I bet if he had a hearing test he would find out differently.

My hearing is bad also due to military service and of course motorcycles and tractors etc. I could get hearing aids but figure if I did they might in turn help hurt my hearing so as of right now I hear well enough to not need them yet but there will be a day when I will probably need hearing aids. I always have a ringing in my ears but hey after being on a ship and having air craft land on the roof what do they expect

Definitely should have a muffler. My M had no muffler for a long time and it has done my hearing no good at all. Nowadays, even with a muffler I wear good quality hearing protection same as I do with chainsaws, circular saws and firearms. Some people seem to think it a sign of weakness, but it is my hearing at stake, so now I do the right thing.
