Timing Super A

Guys I'm reassembling my Super A. Question regarding distributor. I had separated the two halves of the distributor for cleaning and painting. Is there a good way to get this thing in time prior to firing up? I know I can get #1 on TDC and eyeball this rotor inline with the #1 position on the cap, but is there a easier...more accurate way?
What is the Timing Advance? My crank pulley has several marks on it but nothing to line it up with.

Thanks for all the great advice. Keeping up with all the post on here is almost as addictive as the tractor.

Remove the flywheel access plate under the engine; there should be a raised rib to indicate TDC and the flywheel is marked, usually rather faintly.

That will be good enough to get it to start those marks on the pulley mite not be of any good as they could have came from another engine.

I found the flywheel mark but can not locate the rib to line it up with. I have #1 cylinder at the top and the mark on the flywheel is at about the 5:00 position looking at the block. Is this about where it should be?
I now wish i had checked this out before I put the engine back on the tractor. Tip for next time!!

If your flywheel cover is of the cast variety, the rib is more of a fin on the inside of the casting. If the cover is the stamped steel one, it is the vertical rib stamped into it.

Either one should line up with your timing mark at 6:00, but that cover does need to be installed. Dead bottom on the flywheel mark is TDC on #1 and #4.

Thanks Guys
I hadn't put the cover back on yet. Probably why I couldn't find the mark.

When I get her running, is the timing to be set advance or does it stay at TDC.
