Fuel sediment bowl replacement

Hello!

I have a 1958 International Model 340 Utility. Back in the summer of 2009 I had to replace the sediment bowl, which was heavily corroed and the "neck" looked like swiss cheese. Yesterday, while disking a field, my tractor developed a fuel delivery problem. I did a band-aid fix on the filter, and pulled the sediment bowl. There wa a high degree or fuel corrosion within the neck and petcock assembly. This was an aftermarket sediment bowl kit from Tractor Supply, and will be temprarily replaced with once since TSC is open on Sundays, and my local Case/IH dealer is not. I need to finish disking the field and get my equipment home (I am leasing some land on another's farm).

My questions:
1) Are the newer, non-IH sediment bowls in need of a schedled replacement?
2) How can I reduce or minimize (if not eliminate) the the corrosion within the sediment bowl/petcock assembly?

As an aside, the carburetor was just rebuilt this past winter, I do not see that as being suspect ... more the filter and petcock assembly.

Thanks for your insight!

A couple years ago I was looking for sediment bowl parts. I found that Napa had complete bowl setups or parts. I have never had a problem with the sediment bowl on my SMTA corroding, I have had trouble with plugging in the inlet but that is another issue. I wonder if it has to do with weather where you live, I am in the NW where it is pretty dry(normally). Anyway if you have a NAPA parts place there you might check them out. We don't have Tractor Supply so I don't know how the compare.

I think you might want to remove the fuel tank and give it a thorough cleaning. You've got, or did have water in the tank. That water is causing the corrosion. Gasoline does not corrode. Diesel fuel does not corrode. Ethanol does not corrode. It is the water that is causing your problems.

I've not ever had any problems with aftermarket sediment bowl assemblies corroding like you describe.
