i have a 1949 farmall h. it runs good but has a small skip. this is the first farmall ive had so i dont know if it is normal. i adjusted and cleaned the carb but the skip is still there. what else can i do?

I had an H that misfired intermittently when cold. It was a valve that was worn out and didnt always seat well. pull your muffler off so you can see in the exhaust manifold and look for fire from either one end or the other while its running.
Also, with your carb- if its the same style at the older f-12s, the float is something that gets ignored on some carb rebuilds and it will come back to haunt yOU. Even if it tests ok-replace it

I'd start with the electrical side of things.

Check your plugs, plug wires, distributor cap closely. They're all fairly inexpensive, so if they're old, just replace them to rule them out.

And as Chris said - check your valves. Adjust the valve lash to be sure they CAN seat properly.

Be sure too that you have clean, fresh gas.

If all of that doesn't help, you'll have to dig deeper.

Depends too on what you mean by a small skip.

That can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people.

Is it some slightly rough running, or random missing? or is there more of a regular pattern or frequency to it?

Does it happen at all engine speeds?

Have you checked/adjusted the valve lash? Or know how to?

Was the "skip" there when you got it or did you change something, and it developed? Alot of ppl put carb kits in, and end up with a rougher running tractor than they had before. Not sayin youre one of them. Don't just go throwin parts at it either. Diagnose it. Which cylinder? Is there a spark on that cylinder? Is fuel delivery an issue? Are you getting enough fuel at the carb? Is it sucking air around the intake? Propane test it. Is the air cleaner plugged? Unhook it, then see how it runs. Check the timing, & set it at TDC static. Pull the valve cover and start it it. Make sure all the valves are opening & closing. Is compression an issue? Did you test it?
Don't try to find the problem by replacing things that don't need to be replaced. Find the problem first, then replace the parts that actually need replaced. Shawn

Oh, and make sure your points are clean and set to the right gap. not sure what it is for an H - think it's .02 but am probably wrong.
