Farmall 300 Hydraulic Pump Seal

I replaced the hydraulic pump seal on my 1955 Farmall 300 and the hydraulic oil is still bypassing into my crankcase. I need a photo or someone to tell me if I have the seal in backwards. What is the proper way to install the seal in the hydraulic pump. Thank you.

Did you look for a groove worn into the shaft where the seal rides? You may need a speedi-sleeve if its worn. Hal

(quoted from post at 09:31:18 06/26/11) Did you mean the lip and spring face the crankcase or engine side? Thanks
No it faces [u:718dfc7cff]in on the pump[/u:718dfc7cff]. Once installed you should not see the spring. However if the old seal had worn a groove in the shaft, you will need the "speedy sleave".

OK thanks. I do have it installed correctly and I didn't notice any groove on the shaft. Maybe a faulty pressure relief valve!!!

Oil pump shaft and seal appear OK. Could a faulty safety valve block possibly be causing excessive psi and blowing by the good seal in the pump to the crankcase?

Not being familiar with most individual models of tractors, I don't know where a pressure test port might be, but it most likely has one. Find that and install a guage, probably one capable of 3000psi will do. Again, not sure what a 300 system pressure might be, but I'd check that agaist the specs... someone here no doubt knows what that is, but being a gear pump from that era (1950s), probably no more than 2500psi. Run your cylinder to the end of the stroke (dead-head it) and read the pressure. If it's noticably higher than the spec, that could be the problem. That's about the only way you can tell anything... put a guage on it.

Hi need help I have this same problem with my 55 IH 300 gas tractor I need to know where to get the seals and speedy sleeve for my hydraulic pump as mine is also dumping its hydraulic fluid into crankcase please let me know where to purchase these items as I cannot find anything but a rebuilt pump for $800 to $1000 this is as much as I paid for my tractor thanks everyone db.
