Sickle Bar Mower Question

I've tried in 'implement-ally' but still haven't gotten an answer.

Could anybody tell me the difference between the various IH sickle bar mowers. Mowers of the A-21 variety.

I get that the first letter designates which tractor it fits - A for an A, C for a C.

But what are the numbers?

How do I know if I have a say a 21 or a 28???

I 'believe' the 24 is a heavy duty version of the 21, and you can tell the difference because the 24 has two springs instead of the 21's one spring, but not sure if that's even true.

Is there something specific you can look at, measure, count, whatever, that tells you what exact model you're looking at???
 
OOoo! Excellent question. I have been considering a sickle bar mower, since I live on the high plains (desert) of Colorado. A brush hog takes what little top soil we have and throws it to the wind. And yet, I need to mow with something, so as to keep a fire break. We"re in stage 2 fire alert, and nothing is green this year.
 
You have an A-21. I have two of them, one still has the original lettering, both have 6' bars. It shares a lot of common components with the C-21, and the later versions used on the Super C, 200,230 and 240. The A-16 would manual hand lift control on it. It is required to offset your left rear tire for the lift rod to hook up to the touch-control.

They came with 5' 6' or 7' bars and according to the catalog will cut 21 acres of hay in a 10 hour day.

The 24 series has a heavier frame, double spings and was made for the larger tractors.

I can't tell by your pictures if all of the mounting hardware is there or not. There should be another small rod that wedges in between the final drives.
 
Very interesting that that's where the 21 comes from. Probably the last thing I would have guessed.

So if anybody is in doubt, they can go out and mow for 10 hours, measure what they've mowed, and presto, they'll know which model they have. : )

Thank you for the info. Now that I know, I can work on getting a manual and see about missing parts.
