Farmall M parts question

I had to replace the head gasket on my Farmall M this summer. Under the valve cover is a 1/4 inch tube that runs from the front of the engine to the back. Not sure what this is or what it does. There was a small hole in it and lots of gunk on the tube and on the valve cover. Went to purchase a replacement tube and found out the part is no longer available. Local International dealer mentioned bronzing the hole as an option. As I was cleaning the tube it looked like the hole may have been there for a reason. I did bronze it so the hole is covered. Can someone tell me what the tube does and is there suppose to be a hole in it?

The tube is important. It is used to vent the crankcase into the air cleaner. (early version of PCV) there is a hose connection that leads to the air cleaner to assist in drawing out Crankcase fumes. caseih.com parts diagrams show the connection. (easily made) It will show much more Blowby out the road draft tube if plugged up. Jim

The tube also vents the governor case. The tube at the front connects to the tube from the governor case. AS stated elsewhere the tube also collect fumes from the valve cover and takes it all to the air-cleaner

Sounds like your local IH dealer is not very well educated on the classic Farmalls.
