I have a 1975 International cub lo-boy 185 with a 12 volt Neg ground. I need to replace the coil what I need to know is do I need a coil with or without a internal resistor. Thank You onehardcase

With a charged battery. Turn on the key and measure the voltage at the distributor terminal. If voltage, turn the engine till the points close. (No voltage there now)
Then measure the voltage at the coil terminal connected to the ignition. If it is 12+ volts you need a 12 volt coil no resistor needed.
If it is between 8 and 6 volts you need a coil made for use with a resistor. Some of the IH tractors had a resistor built into the wire going to the coil, it is actually the wire, and not obvious. Jim

You could also trace the ignition wire from the key switch to the coil. If there is a white ceramic device spliced into the wire anywhere between the key and coil, the coil is a standard 6V type.

The 185 does not use an ignition resistor. The coil should have about 3 Ohms of resistance between the terminals.
You can go to www.caseih.com and find the part number for the correct coil.
