I cant get the motor to start on gas but it will pull start on diesel behind another tractor. i took a spark plug out and checked for spark and it seems like im not getting spark. any suggestions as to where to check for issues?

i take it you did nothing and dont know where to start. first how long since tractor ran on gas? may be as simple as filing points and checking gap. could be ignition grounding switch also. since its a super , talking dist here.

I did file the points and checked the gap. It's been about a year that it ran on gas. I also switched the coil with one that for sure works. Also there was a wire that ran from the switch to the plate on the manifold that was in bad shape so I switched that out as well.

That is probably your problem. That is the grounding switch. Usually the wire gets rotten and it will ground out all the time. Not sure about a coil system/how they did it, but it is a pretty common problem on a mag system.

When I had a VAC that didn't run I could chase the power through the coil and found it was past the coil and in/near the condenser. You could possibly use the tester in a manner like that.

need to take that cover off and check the contacts making sure their clean, no contact on the diesel side. when checking for spark need to have it on gas side cause diesel side definitly will have no spark.

I sat there trying to figure out why my fuel bowl wouldn't fill one time...

With a distributor, the wire to the manifold should be at battery voltage when the tractor is in the Gas start mode. If not, a plain toggle switch can be used to feed the coil when starting, then shut off when running. This will at least identify the issue. Jim

Well we messed with it a little more tonight and found out that the person who "cleaned the points" never really cleaned the points. All he did was make the inside of the cap nice and shinny. Once the points were finally cleaned we put it all back together and attempted to start it. finally it started after a good 15-30 seconds if not longer. Any suggestions on how to get it to start quicker?

they take lots of choke to start, then once started only push it in halfway till it warms up . can tell as its picking up rpm.run it a good long minute till diesel change over.
