Farmall 350 power steering problem

I have a Farmall 350 with power steering that catches to the left. Is will not turn left with any amount of arm strength. A very slight turn to the right and then it will turn left. Right turning is never an issue.

At slow speed this is no problem as I know the drill. It gets interesting in road gear when trying to stay out of the ditch.

What's the fix?

If it is a factory Behlen unit it is likely the roll pins in the steering control valve. Some may be broke or just worn badly. You can still get gaskets and seals for that unit but no doubt the input shaft will be worn and will have to be built up as I doubt if that shaft would be available or affordable. Of course, make sure it isn't in the worm or ball bearing on front end of worm shaft.

Steering linkage is fine. With the front end blocked up and motor off it turns fine. Everything is tight.

That was sure a bad design to have the input shaft of those units be the external bearing support for the unit. I rebuilt mine on my 350D and had to replace the input shaft as it was very badly worn. I priced one at CaseIH and at the time I think they first quoted a price of over $300 and then after checking found out it was not available. I had a machine shop buddy fix mine. This was another story in itself. First they tried welding it up, but the shaft was so bad it warped. Then they made a new one. However, they located one hole slightly off which resulted in the unit pulling to one side all the time. I had to take it back apart and then discovered the problem. Got that fixed and now it works fine. Roger

I think what pete is refering to is [u:1830f3727b]internal[/u:1830f3727b] to the unit, not the linkage. There has to be a valve in the unit so theunit knows which way you are turning the unit. This causes a very slight lag from the input shaft to the output. I'm not familiar with the internals of the Behlen unit, but on the CharLynn it's only a couple of degrees. With it jacked up and no flow to the unit you might not even notice it.
