Super A Clutch

Where should the clutch engage on the pedal on my 1951 Super A? How far down or up? Right now it has to be all the way down as far as you can press the pedal. One of the fingers on the clutch is very loose and the other two are against the release bearing. Any suggestions? Should I split it to repair the clutch finger or whatever else is needed?

If you go to the trouble to split it, you might as well go ahead and just put a new clutch in it. I think they used two different ones. I think they were either Auburn or Rockford. Can't remember which one mine took, I replaced it about 25 years ago. Quite a job, that front end was hard to handle, the front wheels wanted to flop around quite a bit.

Free play in the clutch pedal should be 1-1.25 inches. With that clearance it will release where it is supposed to. I don't pay too much attention to the release point, as long as it doesn't grind when shifting gears. You might try tightening the loose finger, but working through that small hole is difficult. I have recently split a Super A, and C and just now got my C back together, both for engine overhauls. Not particularly difficult, just time consuming. You probably need to closely examine the clutch, along with the release bearing and pilot bushing, anyway.

Thank you for your replies.
Right now there is zero free play in the clutch, nothing at all. There is no adjustment left on the finger bolt. Also the loose finger must have a broken spring on it.
Is it doing damage to drive it the way it is very short distances like onto a trailer etc?

It's doing damage every time you move it, but the major damage is already done. You need to replace the clutch, release bearing and pilot bushing, along with likely having the flywheel resurfaced. With no pedal clearance you are very close to having it not move at all.

Thank you for your help regarding the clutch. Do you have a suggestion for re-upholstering the seat? The cushion is completely gone. How would it be done with that metal edge going all around that doesn't have a join or anything? I don't want to ruin the old seat as I would like to keep it original. Is it acceptable to just use an elasticized seat cover instead? It doesn't look as good as upholstery I suppose.

You can buy a brand new, complete seat for what it would cost to have yours reupholstered, or you can buy a cushion cover that is made to "snap" over the steel pan and will look almost as good as a brand new seat. The snap fit seat covers run about $30.

Thanks rustyfarmall for this. I didn't know about the snap on seat covers. I will look into that. Is there a certain place that you know of that sells them? Maybe we are not supposed to name vendors here. I will also look online to see what I can find.

My email is open if you use the modern version.
