I am in the final stages of restoring my Dad's '46 Farmall M. Dad had always told me that when he came home from WWII that tractors were hard to get because of all the war production and that he got moved to the top of the local list because he was a veteran.

We were at the Pennfield show and talked to an older gentleman who told me that when the farmer GI's came back from the war they were given a "green card" that allowed them to buy a tractor, plow and disc.
I know that Dad had a #8 3 bottom little genius plow and a 10' IH disc and suspect that he may have gotten this same deal. Mom & Dad are both gone now so I really don't have anyone to confirm if that is true or not.

Was just wondering if any of you folks had ever heard that story about the "green card".

I hope someday to drive it to the cemetery and take a picture of it next to Dad's tomb stone on Memorial Day.----God Bless Those That Served

I worked for a man that told me the same thing, he could not get a M but did buy a crawler to farm with. He said the next year he did get an M, then he found out that the M would pull half the plow at twice the speed as the crawler, so he sold the T-D or whatever the model was)then got one more M. They may have been H s, but the stories are true about first on the list.

Not sure about the card but my H has a similar story. People were waiting in line for the tractor and the gentleman that got it got it because he was a veteran, and as grandpa tells it they were glad that he got the tractor before they did because he was a vet. Not sure if it came with any implements though. Grandpa bought it off the vet 40 years ago so it's hard to say. It's to bad that this kind of story probly wouldn't happen today. The vet would probly get sued for cutting in line.

Much respect goes out to the "Greatest Generation" - hopefully no-one will ever forget their service, or sacrifice.

God Bless all American Vets!

I had 2 uncles that were able to get tractors that way upon returning home, one an Oliver 70 is still in the family
