Farmall H transmission problem

I went to back the H out today to finish mowing a field and when I put it into reverse and let up a little on the clutch it acted like it was stuck in two gears, so I took it out of reverse and let up on the clutch and it wanted to move forward with the stick in neutral. I shut off the engine, pulled the gearshift and the rails were all in neutral. I put it back together and tried it again and could feel it lock in all gears except fifth. I was able to drive it the few feet back up into the shed by slipping the clutch, but it felt like it was in 5th. I am guessing that maybe the pilot bearing has locked up, or possibly the fork has become separate from the rail and 5th is engaged. I haven't had it in 5th for a couple of weeks, so that seemed unlikely. Does the pilot bearing idea make sense, or is there something else that I have not considered? I am going away for my annual bicycle trip to the Adirondacks early Wednesday morning, so I won't be opening it up till after I get back on the 16th. I have a 53 SH parts tractor and I am thinking that if everything is in good shape in it I might put that transmission in, or if it is not good I have a complete H transmission in parts that I will put in, since it has less wear than the one I currently have in there. I would like to have the higher 2,3, 4 that the SH has, if it is in good shape. Should I replace the differential while I am in there to avoid noise, or will it not matter? Any advice will be very much appreciated. The good thing is that I don't need the H too much at this time of year since the haying is done already. I'm sorry that this is so long.

It does sound like the pilot bearing might have seized up. You'll need to open it to see if the main drive gear is worn out too. At least an H transmission is easy to work on...

Why is the Super H a parts tractor and how good is the motor in the H. Seems to me it would be best to put H engine in Super H tractor especially if you have a stage 2 Super H with live hyd. You would have a much better tractor and maby an easier transplant. Something to consider. Armand
