Battery Charger Modification

Harbor Freight sells a 12V trickle charger for about $5. I use them on all my ATV's and other 12V equipment. Does anyone have a modification that they have used successfully so that the chargers can be used on 6V equipment? If so, please post it so us old timers can keep our iron in good shape for the occasional play day.

Thanks.

Doug, They do exist. I have a Ford Model a pickup
That has a 6 volt trickel built into it. I don't have the brand or info right now. oldiron29

I have a couple Harbor Freight trickle chargers. I much prefer the Schumacher battery maintainer that Walmart sells for about $20, well worth the price.

The Harbor Freight charger has a red LED that is on if it is connected to EITHER the battery or the outlet. It doesn't really tell you it is hooked up and working.

The Shumacher has separate indicators for each connection and two more that tell you if it is charging or if it has switched over to maintainer mode. It also auto-detects and switches between 6 and 12 volts.

I have used the harbor freight trickle battery maintainers on my atvs and motorcycles. I also wanted to get some for 6v so I got online and told them there was a substantial market out there for the old tractors and antique autos. They responded that they would look into it but its been a year now and I haven't seen them yet. I do have a Battery Tender Junior that is 6v but they are pricey compared to Harbor Frieght. I feel your pain.

I use (Deltran Battery Tender Charger) I have one in 6 volt and one in 12 volt. They come in 6-8-12-24-36 and 48 volt. One thing nice about these chargers they have wires that bolt to battery and can hang out anywhere you want them. You don't have to flip the set or hood to get to the battery.

Buy American made. Forget the Harbor Freight "Made in China" junk and buy Schumacher. They have some very good, dependable battery chargers with any feature you want. After all, where was your old tractor made?

That reminds me of another feature of the Schumacher I described earlier. The line from the charger to the battery has a plug and there are 2 interchangable ends. One has connectors that can be permanently attached to the tractor the other has conventional clamps similar to most chargers.

Schumacher is a good product but its now made in Mexico. I bought a 10 amp 6v-12 volt Schumacher two weeks ago for 40+$ and it's stamped made in Mexico. I delivered freight into Schumachers plant they had in Rensselaer,In.about 15 years ago. I use the schumacher to charge low batterys and Deltran battery tender to keep them charged over winterand in storage. Deltran tenders are made in China but are not cheap .They run about $25.00 on up.
