Hey guys,

I know this subject is probably been "worn out",ButI have to get new rears for My Super M(OUCH !!!!!)

I have 12" rims that are in GREAT shape. They currently have 14.9s but I thought if I could get the 15.5s that I would go with them.
I have been told if I was going to run the 15.5s that I would need the 14" rims to be correct.

Also,It looks like I have seen photos of some guys running the "double bevel" style rim like you would see on a 400/450/560 on a M/super M centers like a single bevel rim is supposed to be used.can that be done ???Is that possible???

Any thoughts,or ANY tire anyone cares to give me ??? LOL

Or anyone wanna sell me tires?

I am running 16.9 x 38 tires on my M on 14 inch rims. The rims are the double bevels, but the wheels are off of a 400. The 400 axel is the same size as the M. Generally speaking you can go 2 sizes above your rim width and get away with it. A 15.5 on a 12 inch rim will look like a wedge fit. Also it would be unsafe as it could come off.

I used to run 15.5's but really prefer the 14.9. They make the tractor sit a little more level. My neighbor runs 14.9's on his SMTA and 450.

I should clarify: I like 14.9x38 tires. I did not read your post too clearly and assume you are running 14.9x28 tires? If you have to buy new rims to run a 38" tire, I would like to suggest pricing 14.9x38's as well. Good Luck.

With 12" rims, you can use either a 13.6 OR 14.9. The 15.5s really need a 14" wide rim.

If it was my tractor i would stick with 14.9. 38s They make the tractor sit nice and level. The 15.5s arent that much wider but they are a lot lower side wall.

Yes d282,I am currently running 14.9x38s They are the old original "diamond side wall" Goodyears. They are still somewhat good,60-70% tread, but I am just contimplating the day when the sidewalls are gonna give out??? (Some cracking in them.)

I like the 14.9x38s I dont know if I would ever even need the 15.5s.I know the circumference on the 15.5 is smaller, giving you a lower gear, but I do not know if I need it to be lower greared???

I am just kinda in the market for tires and considering what to get/look for.

The 14.9 was developed to be an upgrade for the 13.6. Slightly more footprint on the ground, would still fit on the 12 inch wide rim, and provide the same ground speeds as the 13.6.

If you want to use a pair of 15.5s, you will need wider rims, and since those wider rims will not bolt up to the Farmall M centers, you will need to find a pair of cast centers from a 400 or 450.

Yes, you can squeeze the 15.5s onto your 12" rims, but you will not like the looks or performance.

Although IH usually recommended that the rim width could be 1 inch less than the tread width, the tires fit better and are curved less if the tread width is the same as the rim width. Example is that the 13.6-38 has a 12 inch tread width, thus fits a 12 inch rim better than an 11 inch rim. Likewise a 14.9-38 tire with 13 inch tread width fits a 13 inch rim best. The tread width was used in the old tire size, they did not change the tire. Thus 12/13.6 are the same size tire as are 13/14.9. There is not old size for the 15.5. 15.5 has only a 0.6 inch wider cross section than a 14.9 (I don't know the exact tread width of a 15.5), so it can go on a 13 or 14 inch rim. After saying all of this, my 460 had 15.5's on a 12 inch rim, they looked ok to me, but had to be misfitted to a certain extent. I replaced them with 13.6's; they fit perfectly and and better than the 13.6's on 11 inch rims on my M. To use double bevel rims on an H or M, you also have to have the cast centers off a later 300 or 350 or 460 for an H; or 400, 450,or 560 for an M. the 6 "spoke" centers will not accept the double bevels.
