TD-18A dozer compression leak

I have a TD18A dozer with the gas start diesel engine in my shop that has a problem with blowing compression into the radiator. I have the cylinder heads removed and I'm able to see the problem. Cylinder #4 fire ring on top of the sleeve is leaking compression. I have checked the sleeve protrusion using a dial indicator and it's about .004 below the rest of the sleeves. I'm looking for somebody that has any experience with this engine for some advice as I go about trying to repair the engine. My e-mail is open, charlie

A realistic method of repair (if the sleeve is OK and not burnt through at the leak) is to shim the sleeve higher in the block. A ring of sheet metal (stainless) made to fit the counterbore, and installed with locktite as the sleeve is seated, would do nicely. Jim

That would work. A sheet of copper would be easier. Original fire rings were copper, later are steel. Removing a sleeve is no fun however.

The other option is to have a new fire ring made with allowance for the extra space. I have the engineering sheet for those somewhere.

PS: Mic the fire rings you have. There is a chance they will be thicker on one side due to compression over time.

They USE to make shims to shim the sleeves up when you did and overhaul. You were suppose to use a depth mic and check the depth of the contour bore then mic the flange on the sleeve and shim to get the correct hight once the sleeve was PRESSED in . It has been many many moons since i was into a TD 18 engine like back in the early sixtys . Once i left the construction industry i swore i would never work on the big stuff again.

I was planning on dropping the oil pan come Monday and pulling the piston and sleeve out. Should not be to bad to pull. This engine uses wet sleeves and I have located a set of o-rings to reseal the sleeve. I did find a head gasket set but they sure know how to charge for them. I also was able to locate a new set of fire rings. I was thinking that I was going to look for factory made shims for a different engine, if they would be a little bigger I can trim the ends so they do not overlap. Thanks much, I'll keep you all posted as repairs progress.
