Anybody have just one WD-9 piston?

I got the ring ridge reamed out and pulled the pistons and number one is TRASHED. It looks like a ring came apart and tore up the ring grove. There is one circle in there that is bigger than a dime!!! I'm sorry I don't have pictures. It looks pretty cool. I think I will make one of those piston clocks out of it.
If you happen to have an oddball piston or two I will take them off your hands.

dont have a piston ,but was gonna say the sleeve taper is good for .013. even if you had .015 taper i wouldn't worry too much. give her a set of rings , and deglaze cyl's , dont spend a lot of time honing as your removing more meat.get her together and warm it up and then get her under load to get them rings seated. you'll be ok.biggest thing is run her warm even if you have to cover some of the rad.i have put just rings in some with a lot of taper and things went well. its not like it will be worked day after day.

It's actually the piston itself that is beat up. The cyl had that slight pitting, but this piston has to be a problem.

Edit - I'll go take my chances with the skunks and get a picture. It is definately worth it.

Yeah, you never know what could have happened.

Here is the worst spot.

There are a couple spots like this one.

I forgot to say earlier that the ring fell like rain when my wife pulled the piston out. (I was down below pushing it up) She's not sure if any of them went into any of the holes...

I learned this trick a long, long time ago.

First thing I do after removing the head is to, one by one, take each piston to TDC. I then try to 'rock it' lateraly in it's bore and across that wrist pin.

Any sideways movement whatsoever means the bore and it's piston are shot.

There is something about the expansion of the rings in their groves that allow you to "feel" .010", but not .005" (for me anyways).

As you say, you never really know - but keep in mind that detonation/pre-ignition can kill rings and cause problems like that.

Just swapping out a piston may not solve the root cause of the problem.

I'm just not familiar enough with diesel engines to know what else to look for, but figured I'd throw my 2 cents in anway.

(quoted from post at 01:46:31 08/26/11) I forgot was that a 335 or a 350 wd9

Just a little 335.

(quoted from post at 04:02:33 08/26/11) There is a set of WD9 pistons on Ebay. The item number is 400236863438.

That is just too steep for me. Plus I don't like the looks of the back one. I suppose I could merge my set and that one and have a decent set.

It's a 6 hour trip, but I will keep it in mind. Is the motor stuck? The local yard had one here for $300, buty I passed on it. It was pretty stripped off, but in hind sight maybe it was worth it. The problem with that one is the engine was stuck. Who knows if you could have gotten one or two pistons out of it alive. After that who knows what they would look like if you did get them out. It sat at the yard for a couple months with no head on it outside. They must have figured it couldn't get more stuck.

Sflem $400 Isnt bad for the pistons to get your tractor going but buy the whole block and pistons on ebay that is in WI Staring bid $199.99 and use what u need and relist extra stuff, There is no complaning on price when restoring a tractor bite the bullet and fix it or junk it LOL I should know with over 20 gas start diesels in my collection

important, check the ring side clearance. if you have more than .005 on the top ring you need pistons. more clearance than that gets the rings twisting too much and cause breakage and as you see what the results are.

I have a '51 TD9 that has had water come in through the exhaust and got in a cylinder, froze, and broke the block. If a guy could get them out the pistons may be alright.

That guy just got back to me. I eBay mailed him two days ago asking how bad the stuck one looked and what size they were. He said 4.5, but it is tough to tell the difference between 4.4 and 4.5 with a tape measure.

the pistons and rods are inside, motor was apart
when i bought it. what size do you need. I can,t
believe someone can,t use all these parts. I have a
48 w9 gas all restored, don,t need the diesel
tractor or parts.

When I worked in a rebuilding shop we had a tool that cut the groove to add a spacer. Don't they do that anymore? I think it was Sealed Power.

I will call you about that tractor. It is a little further than I want to go, but if it has some other stuff I am looking for I would be interested. My seat is rigged up and the steering arm is not very nice.
