positve grd.

If I just use a battery and no generator but leave it hooked up with no belt can I hook it up with a neg grd.? If I fix the generator why does this have to be a pos. grd.?

Most tractors will run without the generator / altnerator hooked up as long as there is enough juice in the battery. I know on older Olivers they will not run without a gen hooked up, BTDT.

As for the generator, it can be switched to neg. ground fairly easily. They can also be stepped up to 12v if desired. I have three that way and don't have $100 in all three, includiong being rebuilt.

If you have your gen switched to neg ground you will need to reverse the wires on the amp meter. Lights don't care if they are neg or pos grd but will have to be changed out if stepped up to 12v. Also will need to change voltage regulators unless like on two of mine that have the regulator attached & then the guy switched them as well

Just the battery alone (no genny wired in) at Pos or Neg ground will power the ignition until it runs down (If its a mag it dont use the battery). If its a coil distributor ignition it performs best if the coil polarity matches the battery however.

NOTE BEFORE you re start the tractor with a genny connected, POLARIZE the genny so it matches the tractor polarity.

Most 6 volt came originally POS ground but a genny can charge at either polarity once polarized and if it has an ammeter its leads need swapped if you change polarity and likewise the coil as noted above

Pos or Neg ground doesn't matter with a generator system.

All you have to do is like John T says... after you fix the generator:

1. Polarize it with the battery hooked up Neg ground.
2. Swap the wires on the ammeter so it reads correctly while charging.

If you upgrade to 12V and an alternator, you MUST wire the tractor negative ground, because the alternator has electronic components in it that are sensitive to polarity. Pos ground will fry most alternators.

Thank you all for your information. I had it running yesterday. It had not been run for over 2 years. I was overjoyed at how nice it ran. Thanks again for your help.
