In the process of changing the oil for the first time in my H and discoverd alot of sludge in the base of the filter housing. I drained the oil from the pan and slipped my finger inside to see if there was any sludge around the base of the pan and noticed that there is somthing covering the oil drain hole. The oil came out just fine but there is somthing big directly over the hole that i can move up and down easily with my finger. Does anybody know what this is? My friend thinks I may have dropped a lifter? Any help is appreciated!

thats is the oil pump screen, all is well. you may want to drop the pan to clean the sludge though.

The bottom of the oil pump pick up tube has a screen assembly on it that is designed to float up on the oil. That allows the screen to rise up above he sludge that collects on the bottom of the pan. When you drain the oil the screen drops down to its lowest position.
