looking for a machine shop..

i have a 300u which has a worn steering box which i wanna take apart and have gears remachine and bushings made, anyone now of a good machine shop i can send my parts to for this....thanks Mike

Check with "The Old Hokie" over on the nfords website . This site doesn't allow advertising of other websites so I'll type it backwards to see if it goes thru ( nnalert ) .It won't hurt to ask the man . He does special jobs . HTH ! God bless

Finding a good gear to replace the worn gears is probably less expesive and higher reliability. The bushings are available for the Bolster shaft and rear of box at the horizontal shaft. The ball bearing is common and found at Motion Industries, or other bearing store. Accept only a Deep groove bearing, not one that matches the size. The bearing numbers on it are good.

What does "deep groove bearing" mean?

I tried finding b_alert after reading the post with no luck. Any other tips?

Standard Ball bearings have inner and outer races that cover about 1/5th of the ball diameter in the groove of the race. A Deep groove series covers about 25% to 28% of the ball diameter in the groove depth.
The difference is that the Standard bearing is not rated for axiel thrust loads, only radial loads, with incidental thrust levels.
A deep groove bearing is able to deal with substantial axial loads in combination with Radial loads. The front bearing in a Farmall steering gearbox (several models with this same fundamental design, beyond H and M series.) use this bearing as the sole thrust control on the worm! Jim

Not sure exactly what the inards of a 300 steering box look like - but if it's not too hard to get into, you may want to consider changing out just the bearings/bushings and see how it goes with the original gear.

A little play in a bearing or two can make it feel like there's a lot of slop in gears. You may find they're worn a lot less than you think.

Yes Mike I saw your post over on the N site & sent you a message there also . The Old Hokie usually catches his messages unless weather has him off line . Be patient . God blesss

you have a point there JR, the bearing are available but the bushing have to be machined. i would feel much better knowing i had a good machinist ready for me before i start to rip the box down, this way i wont get stuck and have to put a box back together with the same worn parts..
