live pto on 300 utility

I have a 300 utiltiy that didn't have a pto, on ebay there is a pto off of a 450 utility, i think it will work, its a live pto, can a live pto be engauged while the tractor is running or moving, I have another 300 with an independent pto and i was told I can't add that but I can add a "live" pto, no sure if this is true.

Your choices are a transmission driven PTO or an Independent PTO. The same choices applied to the 450. Whether or not you can use it depends on what parts are already in your transmission. If your tractor has a TA there is a good chance that the IPTO will be usable without changing much. It you do not have a TA then most likely there is no provision made for anything other than the transmission driven PTO. If you were to list the suffix codes after the serial number on your tractor I'm sure someone will be able to tell you what your tractor has for PTO provisions.

The units would not have the same shafts and internal connections. If your 300U has a TA, and provision for a Live Power takeoff (marked in the serial # code, it can be fitted with needed parts. If not it is necessary to basically change out many many components to make it compatible. caseih.com , search for parts, put in 350, scroll to Utility tractor, Power takeoff, to see parts. Jim

First of all, independent PTO means live PTO. They are driven from the spring cover on the main engine clutch. That gets solidly bolted to the flywheel. The IPTO can be engaged under any condition. It"s independent, after all.

The auction is for a clutch type IPTO. There is a multi-disc clutch inside the PTO attachment. Will not fit 300 Utility as the RPM will be affected. They use either a planetary IPTO or the old style transmission driven PTO. The suffix letters after the digits in your serial number will tell us how your tractor is configured.

Should also point out that IH did not make a 450 Utility.

I thought the clutch type did not appear until the later 460/560's. I have an early 460 with a planetary PTO.

Agreed, but it was a planetary one, it did not have clutches.

Truckmaster:

Keep checking eBay for a live PTO specifically for your 300 Utility. I have seen them on there from time to time, and the selling prices are usually in the neighborhood of $100 + shipping if I remember correctly.
