farmall cub or a

looking for a winter project.I would like to find a cub or an a to restore.located in Mass. and have a 800.00 dollar budget. Thanks for any help.

With respect, that is the usual price for a Cub that does not run, or has oil consumption, or horrible tires. Spending 1500 and putting 400 into it over the winter is more likely to make a tractor that will be of service. Jim

In my area a Cub the runs and is one of the old Red ones it will cost you at least $1500 and an A that runs will bring at least a grand. Now one that is complete but does not run well a cub will still bring $800 or more and an A at least $400

For 800, I'd forget the cub.

Because of their small size, everybody wants them as lawn mowers. So they're in high demand. At least here in MA where farmland is rapidly becoming extinct.

And of course high demand = high dollars.

For 800 you might find an A that's running, but for a cub all you'll get is a rusty pile of parts.

And if budget is a major concern, you want something running.

I'd keep checking craigslist - they do pop up there occassionally. Or if you want to expand your area of search - use yakaz.com. That searches all of craigslist for you, across the country (as well as some other sites).

But if you DO go the cub route, you should check out Village Power Equipment Berlin MA, www.external_link great resource for cub parts/questions.

Good luck.

A Cub will barely handle a 42 inch mower, while an A will play with a 5 foot mower. Heck a SA will run a 6 foot mower. You will get a lot more tractor for $500 less if you buy an A. Here in western, pa the A's with hydraulics go for $1000 to $1200, while the non hydraulic ones go for about $600 to $800. The non hydraulic A I have , I bought with a 5 foot Woods under it for $1200. I have been running it for 2 years now and only put fuel in it.

I know in NW Ohio and Se Mi, I nice cub will bring about $1500.00. I know a guy that has a nice one with the front tires need to be replaced but holds air and runs for about 1300.00. I also but a A with turf tires for 900.00 but no mower but runs great. Just depends on how far you want go look. I also have a friend that has a 240 utility that is stuck but has a bush hog and blade for around 100.00.

I did what you told me and watched craigslist and low and behold a farmall cub 1948 with hydrolics and pto pully and it came with a single plow complet with the depth gauge and draw bar. It needs one rear tire and possible valve job.runs good and no rust (barn fresh).drove it on the trailer tonight and got it home.Got a great deal for $800.00 sweet. Glad I took your advise and kept looking. Thanks again
