I have a cub that i have installed an alternator on but i am having no luck at getting it to work. what i have done is no different from any of my other tractors so i am at a loss. i am using the typical gm alternator (new) terminal 2 is connected to bat terminal on back as usual and terminal 1 has a diode in line to the switch but i am getting no charge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the reply Charlie. I should have included that, yes the band on the diode is on the alternator end of the circuit which best i remember is correct. Could it be possible that the cub at full throttle still doesnt turn the alternator fast enough to excite the regulator? I am running off the original generator pulley only just as the original generator was run.

Check to make sure you have power to all three terminals with the switch on and no power to #1 with the switch off.

With 12 volts applied to the #1 terminal the 10SI should begin to charge at 500 - 700 RPM. That is alternator speed which is about 2 1/2 times faster than engine speed.

If you have power at all three terminals and it is not charging the problem is in the alternator. You can try grounding the little tab inside the D shaped hole to the case. That takes the regulator out of the circuit.

Tim - You can temporarily bypass the diode (place a jumper around it) to test alternator operation. Or bypass the regulator by shorting the tab inside the back like Owen suggests.

However it may simply be the alternator is spinning to slow for initial excitation, as you suspect. Solution is replace the pulley with a smaller one (smallest you can find will be best...)
