carburetor or ????

1940 Farmall H. Start her up runs great. Pop the clutch to go,misses ,spits ,sputters, have to keep fiddeling with the choke. After about 5 minutes of this she runs great. Put her under a load, lacks power till she warms up. Fresh fuel, fresh fuel filter. Any ideas guys. Thanks

Adjust the carburator, and if it runs ok when warmed up, you don't need to do anything. All letter series are slow warming up, you can't start it then let out the clutch and drive off with a cold engine.

POP the clutch??? That is a no no you let it out slow till it hits the stop. Fuel filter??? If your talking an in line filter that could well be the problem since they are made for systems with a pump and can restrict the flue flow some.
As for the choke that says the carb is either set to lean or you have a clogged up main jet

That fresh fuel filter might be the clue. If it is one of those in-line jobs, you don't need it, and if it is not rated for a gravity flow fuel system, it could very well be restricting the flow of fuel.

Other than that, and eliminating any internal carb problems, or external adjustments, or leaky gaskets, it's the nature of the beast.

Just to let you know , I was only inferring about popping the clutch. I've had this tractor for 40 years and it is treated better than most men treat their wives , thank you . I only wanted some advice. I do all the work on the old girl . Thanks for all the advice.Greatly appreciated .

That really is not bad for 71 years old. I know I have to get myself going slowly at 61.

Charles,Ill bet your carb needs a little attention and maybe tweak the timing,Ill bet theres nothing wrong with your inline filter,Ive got them on a couple of mine and never have a problem. You can get filters for either pumps or gravity

Yes, but if you randomly choose a filter off the shelf at the local Autozone, odds are good that you will end up with one meant for pressurized fuel systems. Nearly every on-road vehicle made in the last 70 years has a fuel pump.

You need to specifically choose a filter for gravity flow systems, or else you are starving your tractor for fuel.

Well, if you can rule out the fuel delivery problem I would check your ignition system. It's always something simple causing the problem.

You should be able to drain out a couple gallons or more of gas into a can at a good and steady rate for a few minutes after the filter. Might have rust or a blockage in the tank.
