i have a 154 cub i rewired it replacing with new parts, coil, selinoid, points etc. it won't fire the only thing i can think of i wired the selinoid backwards, or the points are tuching. the coil doen't get hot but the negative battery wire warms up also i have new battery

Use a volt meter or test lite and with the ignition switch in the on position and the points open see if you have battery voltage on both small terminals on your coil. Can you post a picture of your solenoid? Hal

remove cable, put test lamp IN LINE with cable.. then start pulling things and see what make sthe lamp go out.

first thin i'd pull is armature wire..

First 2 things that pop into my head are you have the battery in backwards, or you have a bad neg. cable. Is it hot all the time, or just when trying to start it?

I do not know about the fire part of it but how in the world are you getting it to turn over using an old style cut out generator?? These things were made with starter/generators like on a Cadet.

How hot is hot?

I'd disconnect the battery and stop for a while.

Let it cool down and start over.

Heat in a battery is only going to come from a lot of current flowing.

If you've been cranking this thing a lot, as I imagine you have been tyring to diagnose this problem, then that's a lot of current, and yes the battery will get hot.

If you let it cool, connect it back up and if it gets hot all on it's own, there's current flowing that shouldn't be (assuming your lights are off)

Take it from there.

They were also made with Cub 154s.

Weel i have learned something tonight, never realized 154 loboys had a generator set up like pre 1950 Cub's. Oh Well.

Not quite like a pre 1950 cub. The 154s and 185s had a starter/generator system for cranking with a mounted voltage regulator, just like the photo. On the 184s, they went to a traditional ring gear starter with a alternator.

Clean the terminal and post. check the wire for corrosion. If OK, and clean, and tight, and still heats, it is a too small cable. Jim
