Super A gas cap slosh leaking

The original cap leaked when the gas sloshed (rough ground), so I replaced it with one from TSC. It's better, but still leaks.

Is the problem that the tank filler ring is so worn that it just doesn't hold the cap tight enough?

Is it possible to spot weld a short drop tube into the tank filler to cut the slosh factor (as I've seen on other fuel tanks)?

Is there a better cap that cures the problem?

Do I need to replace the tank? It's otherwise in good shape.

I'd like to get this cured before I attempt to put new paint on it.

Thanks,
Well Worn

Can you post a good photo of the filler ring? Chances are you might be able to "metal work" the ring to where it will seal.

Lets take a look at it.

There is a tool and someone on this site has one.
I'll let them volunteer it. It bends the metal of
the latch cams and straightens the rim. The free
gas cap offer is still operational, look it up in
the archives here Sending a serial number is all
that is needed. Welding is not needed, however if
a baffle were installed it would work. Heat and
fuel tanks are not compatible in most cases
without professional preparation. The tool works,
and was mentioned in the archives about two years
ago. To the best of my recollection. Jim

Why not just make a new gasket for the cap i have made them out of some thick cork material and they can work just fine. You can get a new cap from I-H free ir you send them the serial#

My super h had leaked from the time it was new until I got the replacement cap two yrs ago and it hasn't leaked a drop since.

I have the same problem on my 1944 M that I bought last year. The top surface of the filler neck was damaged prior to my buying the tractor. Picture shows the damaged , deformed sealing surface of the neck. What is best to do, cut entire neck off and weld in another one from some source? Probably would not be necessary to have one from another M ( or any other tractor for that matter ), a combine tank neck should work. And it may be quite possible that a filler neck from a tank from an old truck or car would work, seems to me that vehicles from way back had gas caps and filler necks that looked similar to what was on old farm tractors.

That is the type of damage the tool was designed to repair.

All IH dealers were issued the tool as part of the fuel cap replacement program. When ever we worked on a gas tractor that was part of the recall we had to make sure the sealing area of the tank filler opening was is good shape and install the new style cap. If you can find a dealer that had the IH Ag franchise in the late '70s or early '80s they probably still have the tool. You probably will no longer get it done free of charge since the recall stayed with IH/Navistar. Tenneco did not take on that liability when they bought the IH Ag division.

The starting tank on my MD had a problem similar to this. I bent the tabs on the tank in a little and squeezed the tabs on the fuel cap up a little bit. It is better but not perfect.

Thank you, gentlemen, for all the info.

There are no obvious dings or imperfections in the filler ring - it's just like the cap can't grip tight enough. I tried bending the cap tabs a bit, and only succeeded in putting a small dent in the top of the cap.

I'd post a pic of the filler, but on noisy rural dialup that drops connections often it would take a couple days to get a photo loaded.

I'm well aware of the gas and sparks issues - was a volunteer fireman for a few decades, but got too busy farming and decided to leave the smoke eating to the younger bucks. :)

I have seen another SA with a "tall" gas cap - is that the recall replacement? Is reforming the filler to lengthen the internal tabs in the neck part of the recall?

(quoted from post at 18:03:18 11/19/11) Well Worn--where are you located? Steve

Steve, I'm in western NY, about between Buffalo and Erie PA.

Closest IH dealer is pretty small - LaPorte's in Westfield about 30 miles away. I may just call them next week and see if they have the tool, but not sure they'd let it out for more than a day, and not sure I want to invest a 120 mile drive for the use of it.

Go to www.ihgascap.com. There's a form to fill out.
Punch in your name, address, tractor model, and serial number and you will get a new cap in about 2 weeks. It free of charge including shipping. A new gasket is also included. These caps solved ALL my gas tank leak problems.

Here is the tool Jim and some of the others were talking about. A retired machinist named Earl (on farmallcub.com) makes these and they work great but are not cheap. Not sure if he is still making them or not but he had them at the Cub Tug at Big Dogs in Circleville, OH this last summer.

The new style cap is tall because it has internal
baffles and partitions that separate liquid fuel
from vapor. The tabs and gaskets appear to be ore
robust than the original and more well secured to
the structure. Do the cap for free thing. My
family has gotten more than 10, but we do have many
tractors that are shaded in the long wave length
end of the spectrum. Jim
