Setting governor speed.

Can anyone tell me what kind of instrument or tool I need to set the governor and idle speeds on a tractor with a mag? I lined up the governor and carburetor arms on my A last night. They were off about a 1/4" or so. I also have quite a bit of slop from the idle position on my governor lever to where it starts to make the engine speed increase when moved. So I need to do some investigating. Will an inductive or hard wired tachometer pick up a signal from a mag? Thanks, Steve

Steve - Any inductive tach that senses off a plug wire will work fine with a mag.

"Tiny Tach" is one. Leave it permanently installed and it works as an engine hour meter as well.

Unfortunately most hard-wired tachs won't work with a mag.

The free play in the carb rod is required for the govenor to work properly. the throttle lever should have travel to both ends with lots of play in the idle position. if you haven't adjusted the gov then changing this adjustment until correct will not overspeed the motor............

Is the input lever real sloppy maybe the gov housing needs rebuilding. I have rebuilt several and customers are happy. Did you set the linkage going to the carb correct.

Gene, I set the carb linkage as I was taught to: disconnect the governor arm from the carb linkage. Push the governor [throttle] linkage full open. Hold the governor and carb linkage in full open and adjust the turn-buckle on the carb linkage until the two pin holes are in line. On the throttle slop: On the hand lever it is dead from idle until about half-way before the engine responds to the throttle increase. And then it is not a slow increase. It basically will jump from idle to half throttle. I believe it is getting a little worn. I've been around this tractor all my life, and it has always had slop in about a quarter of the throttle lever, which my grandfather told me was about right. I do know that I can take up the play by adding either shims or a longer collar at the end of the throttle rod where it connects to the governor on the mag side. But, will this effect my top end speed?

To make a hard wired tach work on a magneto, simply wire it as per instructions with tach except the wire that normally goes to the coil, wire that to the kill switch terminal on the side of the magneto, and it will work fine.

[qu Yote="scatter"](reply to post at 18:25:32 11/24/11) [/quote]ou dont want any play on the input shaft the wobble makes too much slop in the linkage for the hand throttle to work good. You can take off the gov housing carefully then get someone to bore out that hole and install a brass bushing and check the holes where the gov spring goes and its tension. Ihave done a bunch of them they will send them to me and i go thru tham and send them back. Seems like i always get a response that the tractor hans never ran that wiell. You have set the linkage correct from the gov to the carb now you need the housinf redone. You can call me if you would like 319-430-3907
