M carb rebuild kit

I bought the "complete" rebuild kit and when it was time to install the fuel adjusting needle in the packing nut all the packing turned to musch. What is the fix for replacing the packing as the kit did not provide any? Do O-rings work? It seemed that the old packing was a rubber type material. Any help out there.
Thanks ,

The packing is a graphite impregnated cotton material. A new packing SHOULD have been included in the complete kit. It looks kind of like a shiny black pellet. I have a few packings on hand, but hesitate to sell or ship just the packing because they are quite fragile. Others will tell you to use some teflon tape or nylon packing string, but I have opened up far too many carburetors that were seriously leaking from the adjustment screw and I found that a substitute for the real packing had been used, and it DID NOT seal up.

Some kits don't have the packing.

If left in the carb when cleaning or soaking, the old packing may turn to goo. It's about impossible to remove and salvage it for reuse, anyway.

I've never seen anything that can be substituted for this that works as well or better than the proper packing.

24703 DA (still available) or 67266 DX (N.L.A.) are the part numbers for the packing.

Not a very "complete" kit now is it?

That part is available from CaseIH by it's self, at least it was not to long ago. It's kind of fun getting the old one out, not hard just take some time.

Recognizing what rusty said, but I wonder if Teflon string packing wouldn't work? Wrap several wraps around, and try it? Wouldn't hurt.

I just finished rebuilding an M carburetor a few days ago. There was strong evidence it had been leaking at the fuel adjustment screw. I removed the screw, and then the packing nut, and then proceeded to pull about 15 feet of teflon tape twisted into a string out of the hole. Does that answer the question?

Speaking from bitter experience it is far better to use the correct packing. It is available, so save yourself the headache of the thing not working properly. I personally dislike having to remove a part I have just fitted, then dismantle it, then re-assemble it and then refit it on account of one defective component. If the job is worth doing, do it well and do it once.
