Engine Bearings

I have the crankshaft out of my '44 H and measured the journals and they are 2.49 (which the shop manual shows as standard). The journals are in great shape (very clean with no scratches or gouges). Am I good to just order new standard bearings without doing any machining to the crank? This tractor is for fun only and will not do any work (it probably won't see 10 hours per year). Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Yes. After getting them, use either the shim method or plastigauge to assure correct clearance. .0015 to 2 is great. Jim

Jim - Plastigage what I used to check bearing clearance on on my Super H and learn the crank was OK for standard size bearings. Worked great!

Your machine shop can polish the crank for you. This will ensure your kids have a tractor with no problems. It is pretty cheap to do.

Yea,Like everyone is saying.

Have it polished and be sure to check the final clearances during re assembly.

(Probably TOO much info, but the secret to good engine assembly is: C L E A N and CONSTANT re checking !!!!)

Did you also measure the journals for taper and out of round? The journals can be clean and smooth, but still be worn out of round. That is not to say that yours are, just that it should be checked.
