IH 424 steering

Would appreciate advice on steering repair. I plan to sell this tractor this spring so I don't want to spend a lot of money on it.Since I am in the process of splitting the tractor to replace the rear main seal. The steering (no power assist) has a worn bearing on the base of the steering shaft. The first question is does the lower steering shaft usually need replacing when the bearing goes bad?. This probably sounds like a real cheapo but it's had to have both rear tires replaced in the last 500 hours

The second question is where is the easiest place to disconnect the steering linkage for a split?

Thanks, Mike

Just open up the steering box and see what's wrong. If the shaft is bad, you can get one at a salvage yard if money is tight.
