Buying a head??

Locally a 560 Diesel head is for sale said to be crack free with new valves.Two questions,First will this head work on a 460 diesel and since the valves were ground,how do you tell if the valve recession is over .003?? Thanks in advance Bud.

same head, the later ones have larger diameter valves. myself , i would pull the valves and inspect the valves and seats if they are new or regound, and also check the guides.can check recession with a straight edge and feeler guage.
funny add i saw couple days ago, ... 560 head looks good just needs cleaning before installing.obviously this guy knows nothing about the head just get it sold.

Thank you sir!! Am i right to think the valve recession is the distance from the top side of the valve to the head?? Am i also right in thinking if the recession is over .003 it means new seats and did these heads have replaceable insert seats?? Many thanks!!Bud.

IH made 3 common sizes of this glow plug start engine, D236 for 460, D282 for 560/656/706, D301 was used in combines & crawlers or construction, head will interchange, early had small valves, head casting number began with 278, later big valve was 323, all use same head gasket.

i am not sure what the allowable recession is, but it sems like it would be more than .003 the valves are seated right in the head, so would have to cut the new seats in.
