H not starting

I have a Farmall H that is not starting, it has spark, but won"t fire. The starter seems to be turning very slowly even when I have a 6 volt charger/starter attached to it, a bolt on the starter also starts to glow after a while. Any ideas what could be going wrong here? Also, I"m not sure if I have fuel flow either, I know gas gets to the bottom of the carb because I opened the drain at the bottom and fuel pours out. How hard is it to clean/rebuild a carb on an H?

Thanks!

The glowing bolt is a problem that must be addressed.
Assuming the bolt is not the bolt holding the battery cable to the switch, that leaves only the through bolts holding it together. or holding the starter to the tractor. That bolt is getting heavy electrical current, and it should not. Tell us which bolt it is so we can help. Jim

hot bolts could mean a bad connection ( makes heat ).

ditto what jn said.

post more info.

if starter turning slow.. might be bad ground and or cable / terminal connections.

have you cleaned those?

is battery fully charged?

You probably need 00 battery cables with soldered lugs. Don't make them any longer than necessary. Clean all the connections including where the battery is grounded until they're shiny. Check the specific gravity of your battery cells using a hydrometer. Should be around 1.250. Your starter may be drawing too much current from your battery so there's not enough battery voltage for your ignition. If you have another tractor I would pull start the H. Your starter won't be dropping the battery
when pull starting it. Hal

You better get that starter refreshed with new bearings and brushes and maybe a new Bendix cause that post getting hot is a sure sign of big trouble in the starter and you wont like the price of a rebuilt get it fixed quick. Leave the carb alone for now you got to have the engine turning over good to start.

Ok looks like the bolt on the starter has a wire going back to the starter switch. And yes it turn very slowly.

Remove that nut on the bolt (Actually a stud) that is glowing. Make sure the insulator between the stud and starter frame is good! It could be melted!!
use sand paper on the battery cable end, and the stud and nut. They must be shiny and clean. If it then starts great, put some corrosion inhibitor on the stud/nut. If it still glows and heats up, take the starter for a rebuild. Jim
