756 hydraulic leak

Look at a 756 today. Pto and lift arms did not work. Hydraulic fluid was leaking profusely from in front of the seat under the foot platform. Any ideas ?

Thanks.

Sounds like splines are gone on PTO drive gear and pressure plate. This is what drives PTO and rear hydraulic pump. Requires a tractor split . May as well do a clutch job while in there. Leak could be a steel line split or rusted through.

Thanks, not what I wanted to hear though. I was hoping since fluid was coming out of the top of the tranny, the pump was working, and the leak and lack of hydraulic fluid was causing the PTO and lift not to work. It was kind of hard to see under the foot platform but it looked like it was leaking around some kind of plug.

Thanks again

You are right. Oil wouldn't be gushing out up at the seat level if the PTO splines were gone. Power steering, brakes, and TA wouldn't work either.

The PTO gear drives both hydraulic pumps in the tractor.

BUUUUUUT, if the oil has leaked down to the point where nothing works, you can pretty much write off the hydraulic pumps. They don't like being run dry for more than a few seconds.

Either way this does not sound like a good tractor to buy unless it's really cheap and you're willing to do a little digging to fix it.

$3250 Do you have to split the tractor to replace the pump or PTO clutch pac?

Yes to replace the MCV pump (steering, brakes, T/A) no for the main hydraulic pump (hitch, rear remotes) and the pto comes out the back to work on the clutch packs.

A hydraulic leak under the platform on a 756 could be coming from a bad hydraulic hose going to the front couplers. If the tractor is not equipped with front couplers the leak may be from an auxiliary valve. The other problems could be caused by lack of hydraulic oil. In order to check things out you will need to have at least enough oil to show on the bottom of the dip stick.

The PTO is a self contained unit with its own hydraulic system and clutch.

Both of the hydraulic are serviced without any splitting of the tractor. The hitch pump is located in front of the left rear axle directly across from the hydraulic filter. The Multiple Control Valve is also located on the left side of the tractor just behind the clutch. The MCV pump is mounted on the inside of the MCV assembly ans is serviced by removing the MCV assembly. The PTO is serviced by removing the entire assembly from the tractor.
