Is This the Right Dipstick for a 706? (Pic)

Can't seem to get my 706 full of hy-tran, already added 7 1/2 gallons and it's just barely on the stick. Never looked that close at the stick before but now I noticed it looks like it's been broken or cut and brazed back together. It's an IH version, 1963, I think I read that the early ones had shorter sicks? Anyway, you can see where it's been brazed right above the disc; what is that for anyway? It measures about 13 1/2" to the top of the rubber, is that what it should be?

The dipstick that is picture is for the engine. The transmission dipstick just seals with a pair of o-rings at the top. I have one laying at my shop I'll measure it this morning. Most all dipsticks appear like they have been cut and brazed back together but that was the way they were made. There were two different lengths according to serial number. The early one was shorter by maybe one inch. charlie

You are pouring this Hytran into the hole in the platform deck, near the brake pedals, right?

That's an engine dipstick.

I bought one of the first Powerstrokes in 94. After I had had it a few months they decided it needed a couple more qts of oil. The instructions showed where to scratch a new line on the stick.

Interesting! Yes, I"m pouring it in the platform, this dipstick fits and locks in place perfectly. I don"t remember the oil dipstick looking like that, maybe somebody switched them?

From what I can tell, they raised the fill neck a little bit on the later models. That makes sense b/c you need a longer neck funnel to fill this one and it's a pain to reach in and get the stick out.

I'd appreciate you measuring that - thanks! How well does it seal w/ just the orings? There's quite a bit of dirt that collects in the space under the platform before the filler neck.

Steve, here is a few pictures of the dipstick that came from an early 706 tractor. This distick is also the breather for the transmission. I placed my screwdriver at the full mark of the dipstick. Charlie

Thanks a million Charlie! Sure enough, the two were switched. As I suspected, the hydraulic fluid was over full, but more concerning the engine oil was low. Thankfully it had been reading over full on the wrong stick but I haven't run it very hard or very much so hopefully no damage was done. If you ever make it to Kansas, look me up - I owe you a beer!

Overfull on transmission = no problem. Very common to overfill by 5 gallons as mentioned previously.

Low on engine = bad
