After looking at the bell housing of a 400 with a TA and a farmall SMTA about the only big difference i can see is sheet metal. The enging mounting plates look the same and the TA engament levers look the same brakes, pedels bolt paterns it all apperes it could line up. So here is my big question could i take a farmall M from 49 pulle the bell housing add a TA and would it work? or could i just take the entire rear end of a 400 bolt it to the front end of an M and have somthing i could pick corn with?

Ta will not bolt to your m rear end. have to use the 400 from ta back but then you need a top cover from a mta so you have some where to bolt your steering post and a few other things like hydralic box from mta or late super m so you have hyd. Then you need steering shaft you can use the one from the 400 then use the front one from your m. it can be done easly if you have all the parts. I have done alot of them.

Just don't try to pass it off as an SMTA when you're done.

As it is you may end up with an elite team of old farmers infiltrating your house to eliminate you in your sleep for even contemplating the idea.

I've never seen such "correct police" as I've seen with tractor guys. When you go to a custom car show everyone ooh's and aaah's over the rare Hemi 'Cuda convertible that's been chopped and sectioned, tubbed, and fitted with a modern Hemi motor, airbag suspension, Foose rims, and wide low-profile tires.

Paint one of the estimated 180,000 Farmall Ms still in operation the slightly wrong shade of red, and you better sleep with one eye open! You know how the PETA folks throw animal blood on fur coats? These guys throw old motor oil on "un-correct" tractors!

Yeah, but those same "correct police" ooh and aah at a [u:269e351c66]correct color[/u:269e351c66] paint that is automotive perfect with clear coat, was painted one piece at a time, then carefully assembled, when factory new tractors had runs, light spray places, etc.

However, it would seen Nick actually wants to use his and probably doesn't care about visually correct... good for him!

Unless the Cuda was in bad shape with a bad motor only an idiot would chop it up and put in a modern Hemi.

i have a 400 that is compleat with a motor that froze up and cracked could i just swap the bell housing and the mid section, or could just take the entire rear of the 400 drill and tap the top plate to mount the stearing colum? and then just us the live pump and resivour of of the 400? The other thing is my grandpa curses when we talk about the 400's TA he said they would go out or burn up about every two years if you pulled the lever or not, is there any truth to this?

I would put another block in the 400, put 450 sleeves & pistons in it, rebuild the ta, put a new clutch in it and ROLL !! Fix the M up & sell it !!
One better tractor for half the price.

BTW, you really don't need an MTA top cover for the transmission.

Once the 400's hydraulic pedestal has been removed, there's a place to bolt a flat steel plate, which you can weld or bolt the M steering post to.
