IH 574 diesel - when replacing the rear main seal do you have to pull the crank shaft out or can the rear main seal be replaced with the crank shaft still in the engine? Does anyone have the owners manual or shop manual for this tractor? Thanks!

The rear seal is replaced by splitting and pulling flywheel. It is installed in a separate seal retainer bolted to rear of block. The seal can be put at different depths in retainer so as to ride on a unworn surface. The tool we had at shop came with washers as spacers to install at different depths. Use a good sealer on gasket. You can go to CASEIH online parts catalog and get a good picture of it. D-239 engine, and be sure to include the - or it will not come up.

Hi, is it completely worn out or just leaking?
My brothers 684 always leaked a little crankcase oil at the rear main seal. When we did a clutch job about 10 years ago and had the flywheel off, we found the cap screws on the rear main seal we loose, tightened them to spec and it hasn't leaked since.
