I have a C-301 being rebuilt and my builder accidently threw out the old valve springs thinking they were from another build he did. They were no good anyway. The company that is regrinding my camshaft can make me new springs, and retainers but he needs the dimensions. Does anybody have the correct width and length of these????

You took the head to a machine shop to have it rebuilt, and he doesn't know where to get new springs? I think someone is pulling your leg.

I can get stock springs from a number of different places but I am not putting stock single rate springs back in it. Schneider Cams is regrinding the camshaft and lifters. They are also going to make new double rate springs for it but he needs to know that dimensions to make them. I am replacing them with stiffer springs for better sealing, the old stock ones were shot and had 20lbs compression difference between them. It's not a matter of not knowing where to get them, I just need to know the dimensions.

If you find specs. find out what they are going to charge you. Bates Corporation Bourbon , Indiana has a valve kit for 301 for $255.00. This includes valves, valve guides, valve springs and keepers. They also handle used springs and keepers.
You might call them they may sell just the springs and keepers.

Any auto parts store can probably get new valve springs. Your machine shop should buy them since they threw out the old springs. Case/IH may have them. Hal

Mike disregard my post I thought you were looking for stock springs. You could buy one new spring and keeper and get specs off of it.

d beatty, that may be what I have to do. I can buy a stock one from Bates for pretty cheap price and gets sizes off it. I was just hoping someone would have access to an IT manual or old IH service book, so I wouldn't be stuck with a single spring and retainer/rotocap. On a side note my guides, seats, retainers, and lock wedges are all good, just the springs are sprung.....and missing. I'm not going to make him pay for them since they were going to be tossed out anyway. My fault for not measuring them when I took them apart.

Number of coils: 7 3/4
Free length: 2 7/16
Test load and length: 146 - 156 lbs at 1 19/32

Sounds like Schneider is grinding a mild hotrod cam for you? They won't actually "make" the springs, they'll just match up size & the required pressure for their cam grind- so you need the installed height between the head and retainer, and the OD of the spring- if there's room in the head, they can use a larger OD spring. If it's hotrod setup, the stock pressures and such aren't what they want, they need the dimension they have to work with to match up springs that will work. If they set you up with a double spring setup (did you mean double pressure or double springs?) you may need to cut down the OD of the guide and use PC type seals to clear the ID of the springs. Doesn't seem like they should need to spec doubles unless you're building a serious hi-rpm engine. The springs you end up with will probably be from a car engine, that dimensionally fit in your 301, but meet the pressure requirements of your new cam

Exactly right. I am needing to raise the RPM slightly and want the spring inside the spring setup, so I don't "float" the valves. I need external spring dimensions(lengthXwidth) so they can matchup an aftermarket set to work with the new cam grind.
