Is it ok to use black iron fittings on the return side of the hydraulic system?

Yes we do it all the time. Use them on the pressure side also.

We always used "iron" pipe fittings for hydraulics, both pressure and return, since I was a kid.

With these Chinese fittings though, I don't trust them. There is definitely less material there and they just feel cheap.

Instead, I use cheap Chinese hydraulic fittings for pressure these days. They may not be as good as the USA-made fittings from 20 years ago, but at least they're meant for hydraulics.

I actually bought USA made black pipe fittings at the local Ace Hardware. I was pleasantly surprised.

With the old 800# systems on Hs, Ms, etc., black pipe might be okay on the pressure side, but on the modern 3000# and higher systems I wouldn't do it. Return side, have at it, no problem.
